RELEASED APRIL 7 2023
Despite his previous controversies, Daniel Caesar continues to prove that he not only is a generational talent, but a terrifying force to be reckoned with who remains unbothered in the R&B lane. His raw passion for music, and deeply personal writing style creates an ethereal experience one can only enter from other modern acts such as Frank Ocean, Sampha, Lana Del Rey, etc.
Essentially, this project is a stunning new beginning for Daniel, who reflects on his past in great detail, and peers into the future wiser than ever. His self-awareness is truly his biggest asset as a songwriter, as he never fails to impress his listeners with a great level of relatable lines that accurately depict unfortunate moral mishaps we tend to attract. “My thoughts be like poetry, And when it comes down to it, Separates me from phonies” – (Track 13: Vince Van Gogh) is a perfect way to sum up what he does so well. He writes beautifully poetic pieces over smooth, soulful production that assists him in building a strong connection with his listeners, and distances him from other mediocre R&B artists.
The features on this project include serpentwithfeet, Mustafa, Omar Apollo, Ty Dolla $ign, BADBADNOTGOOD (Deluxe Version), Summer Walker (Deluxe Version), and Rick Ross (Deluxe Version). I honestly believe this is one of the best features lists I’ve seen in quite some time, considering the quality and value each of these artists brought to their respective tracks. We live in an era where artists stack their feature lists to boost streams, or maybe even gain some “clout”, but “Never Enough” is full of heartfelt collaborative efforts. My personal favourite here was Mustafa on “Toronto 2014”, as I’ve been a fan of his for quite some time.
In conclusion, “Never Enough” is not only a love letter to modern R&B/Soul fans, but also an introspective look into Daniel Caesar’s mind. It is easily up there in the running for our top album of the year, and if you haven’t heard it yet, do yourself a favour.
