Neon lights glow through the science of excited atoms. When electricity passes through a sealed tube of neon gas, electrons jump to higher energy levels. As they return, they release energy as vibrant light, creating dazzling displays in cities worldwide.

VOIR DIRE – Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist (MUST-LISTEN)

“Voir Dire” is the first full length collaborative effort from highly regarded producer The Alchemist, and under-appreciated Odd Future alumni, Earl Sweatshirt. If you’re interested in minimalist hip-hop, this album is a magnum opus of the genre. Al has perfected this craft for years now, and I truly think this project rivals all of his previous collaboration projects with other MC’s such as Boldy James, Armand Hammer, Freddie Gibbs, etc.

The magic doesn’t just lie in the album’s simplicity, as its the abstract style of Earl’s delivery and his consistently entertaining and thought-provoking writing that kept me coming back for more.

Although I don’t think accessibility is essential for an artist, this is most definitely the most recent Earl project that is easiest on the ears. I personally thoroughly enjoyed both “Some Rap Songs” and “Feet of Clay”, but I understand this contemporary, yet grim style isn’t for everyone. We get the best of both worlds here, and it creates an Earl Sweatshirt experience like no other.

I would argue this isn’t Al’s best production to date, but that by no means make it any less impressive than it is. A couple of my favorite instrumentals on this were “Vin Skully” & “Free The Ruler”.
