If you’re a fan of Skrillex, Snow Strippers, Ken Carson, or any of the Drain Gang members, then you need to check out 2hollis, an emerging artist from Chicago who is turning heads with his unique blend of EDM, dubstep, trap, hyperpop, cloud rap, and glitchcore.
2hollis is a multi-talented artist, serving as both the vocalist and producer for all his music. In addition, he takes on the roles of director and choreographer for some of his music videos. His production style can’t be narrowed down to one genre as it is constantly changing and evolving with each new track and album. Hollis uses a variety of different production qualities in his music from his manic 808s to his aggressive but melodic synths. His unique production style includes samples that will catch you off guard. If you listen closely, in some songs you can even hear a sample of Minecraft fireworks.
2hollis was destined for the music industry, with his mother, Kathryn Frazier, managing EDM and dubstep legend Skrillex. Hollis dropped his debut album, White Tiger, in 2022. This album, filled with dark and eerie cloud rap-inspired instrumentals is reminiscent of Yung Lean’s early work on albums like Unknown Memory. White Tiger, was the world’s first introduction to his sound. His sophomore album, 2, marked a significant development in his unique production style. The production became more upbeat and fast-paced compared to his previous release and we even see more experimentation in Hollis’s vocal capabilities. The second track, poster boy off this album was one of his first tracks to gain notable attention, with it being featured on an EA Sports video game soundtrack. Fast forward to his latest release, Boy, and you’ll find some of the most creative and captivating song concepts in recent memory. Each track is a journey, with new instruments and 808 patterns introduced at every turn. It’s his most impressive work yet, and it’ll be interesting to see how he manages to push the envelope with future releases.
My introduction to 2hollis was seeing him open for Ken Carson’s “The Chaos Tour.” Initially, many fans seemed unfamiliar with the Chicago artist, but by the end of his set, he had the crowd’s full attention. The mosh pits were almost more intense during 2hollis’s performance than the main act’s. His music offers something for everyone, and seeing him light up a crowd full of trap fans who may not typically resonate with his style of music was incredible. That’s when I knew he was destined for greatness. It’s clear that Hollis’s time on tour with Ken Carson has influenced his music, as evident in his recent single Trauma. This manic, heavy 808-produced banger leaves you questioning the genre and feeling like you could break a brick in half. If you’re eagerly anticipating new music from him like I am, you’re in luck. He just released a new track today, “Gold,” accompanied with a music video and it HITS.
While some may say Hollis is still finding his sound, I’d argue he’s not meant to settle into just one. His constant evolution is part of what makes him intriguing. Watching someone my age create such boundary-pushing art is truly inspiring. If you’re ready to dive into his world, I’ve got a few recommendations to get you started and they are linked below. Shoutout to 2hollis-this is just the beginning.
